These little pumpkins saved me when I needed Halloween party snacks fast. My hands got sticky anyway, naturally.
Kids grabbed them before I could arrange the tray, so yes, they work as Halloween snacks for kids. Scientific enough for me.
They’re no-bake Halloween treats for kids, with marshmallows doing most of the labor. A rare kitchen miracle.

Rice Krispie Treat Pumpkins
EQUIPMENT (PAID LINKS)
- Silicone spatula
Ingredients Â
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 10- ounce bag large marshmallows about 40 marshmallows
- 12 drops yellow liquid food coloring or as needed
- 4 drops red liquid food coloring or as needed
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter for your hands
- 12 Mini Rolos
- 12 green M&M’s
Instructions
- Melt the Butter: Add the butter to a large pot and melt it over low heat. Keep the heat low so the butter melts gently without browning.4 tablespoons butter
- Melt the Marshmallows: Add the marshmallows to the pot and stir until they are completely melted and smooth. Keep stirring so the mixture does not stick or burn.1 10- ounce bag large marshmallows
- Color the Mixture: Remove the pot from the heat. Add the yellow food coloring first and stir well. Add the red food coloring one drop at a time, stirring as you go, until the mixture turns pumpkin orange.12 drops yellow liquid food coloring, 4 drops red liquid food coloring

- Add the Cereal: Pour in the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until the cereal is fully coated with the orange marshmallow mixture. Work fairly quickly because the mixture gets harder to shape as it cools.6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

- Shape the Pumpkins: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Once the mixture is warm but cool enough to handle, coat your hands generously with vegetable oil or melted butter. Scoop and roll the mixture into 12 balls, recoating your hands after each pumpkin so the mixture does not stick.¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter

- Add the Stems: While the pumpkins are still warm, gently press one Mini Rolo into the top of each pumpkin. This makes the stem and helps the treats look like pumpkins instead of suspicious orange cereal balls.12 Mini Rolos
- Add the Leaves: Press one green M&M next to each Mini Rolo to make a leaf. Push it in gently so it sticks without smashing the pumpkin.12 green M&M’s
- Let Them Set: Let the pumpkins cool at room temperature until firm. Serve them the same day, or store them in an airtight container at room temperature.
Rice Krispie Treat Pumpkins Without the Sticky Disaster
Let’s keep this cute and not turn your kitchen into a marshmallow crime scene. These little pumpkins are easy, but they do have opinions.

Oil Your Hands Like You Mean It
The mixture is sticky, warm, and absolutely committed to becoming part of your fingerprints. Rub a little vegetable oil or melted butter on your hands before shaping each pumpkin, not just once at the beginning. One lazy swipe is not enough, and the marshmallows know it.
Food-Safe Gloves Are the Cleanest Cheat
If you have food-safe gloves, use them. They make shaping the pumpkins so much easier, and you will not spend the next ten minutes peeling cereal glue off your knuckles like a person questioning every life choice.
Orange Food Coloring Works Too
The red and yellow food coloring combo works fine, but orange food coloring is the shortcut nobody needs to apologize for. Add a little at a time until the marshmallow mixture looks pumpkin-colored, not traffic-cone orange unless that is your personal Halloween vision.
Shape Them While They’re Still Warm
Do not wait too long before rolling the pumpkins. Once the mixture cools, it gets stiff and bossy, which makes shaping harder than it needs to be. Warm and flexible is the sweet spot, just not hot enough to punish your hands.
Make Smaller Pumpkins for Parties
The recipe makes about 12 larger pumpkins, but you can easily make them smaller for a class party or dessert tray. Smaller pumpkins are easier for kids to grab, and honestly, they make you look like you made more food with the exact same effort.

Swap the Mini Rolos If Needed
Mini Rolos make cute little stems, but they are not the only option. Mini peanut butter cups, Tootsie Rolls, pretzel pieces, or small chunks of chocolate all work. Halloween treats should be cute, not a scavenger hunt across three grocery stores.
Use Different Green Candies for the Leaves
Green M&M’s are easy, but green candy-coated sunflower seeds, green Skittles, or even a tiny piece of green fruit leather can work. Just press the leaf in while the pumpkin is still soft so it actually stays put.
Store Them the Right Way
Keep the pumpkins in an airtight container at room temperature. If you stack them, separate the layers with parchment paper so the candy stems do not get knocked off and start a tiny pumpkin tragedy.
Make Them Ahead, But Not Too Far Ahead
These are best within a day or two, when they are still soft and chewy. You can make them the day before a party, but I would not push it too far unless you enjoy serving festive little cereal rocks.
