If you’ve ever looked at a plate of mozzarella balls and thought, “Wow, these could really use some eyeballs,” then you’re my kind of person.
These skewered salami eyeballs are my go-to creepy Halloween snacks when I want to freak people out just enough to make them laugh before they eat.
Perfect for Halloween food platters or even as part of a Halloween themed dinner for kids, they’re the kind of snack that makes you wonder if you’ve been spending too much time on Pinterest.
You can find more Italian-inspired spooky bites in my Italian-Inspired Halloween Foods Listicle.
The first time I made these, I stuck them right in the middle of a spread of spooky finger foods for Halloween party night, and my friend Lisa screamed before realizing they were just cheese.
That’s when I knew I had a hit. They’re quick, cheap, and fit right in with any Halloween skewer ideas—whether you’re going for gory, goofy, or both. Bonus: no one has to politely nibble—these vanish in minutes.

Skewered Salami Eyeballs
EQUIPMENT (PAID LINKS)
- Skewers
Ingredients
- 1 cup mozzarella balls
- 1 red bell pepper for decoration
- 2 tablespoons kalamata olives
- 4 ounces pepperoni stick
Instructions
- Cut Mozzarella: Use a sharp knife to cut small indents in the mozzarella balls and set them aside.

- Prepare Eyes: Finely chop the kalamata olives and place them into the indents on the mozzarella balls to create the "eyes."

- Slice Pepperoni: Cut the pepperoni stick into small pieces about 3/4 inch (2 cm) long, and also into thin slices or strips about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

- Cut Red Pepper: Slice the red bell pepper into small wedge-shaped pieces for decoration. You can also use dried chili peppers for extra spice if you like.

- Assemble Skewers: Start building the skewer by adding the top pieces first—thread a piece of red bell pepper, followed by a chunk of pepperoni, and then the mozzarella ball with the olive "eye." After that, add a thicker slice of pepperoni. For the base of the skewer, place a few thin slices of pepperoni, followed by another mozzarella ball to keep the skewer stable.

- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate before serving on a Halloween-themed platter.

Whether you’re going for “haunted Italian deli” or just want creepy Halloween snacks that get more side-eyes than your cousin’s costume, these tips will help you pull it off with zero stress.
Think of this as the lazy cook’s survival guide to making spooky finger foods for Halloween party night. I’ve made these more times than I can count, and trust me—once you know the shortcuts, you’ll never go back to doing it the “proper” way.
The Mozzarella Ball Dilemma
If you’re fancy, go ahead and buy the fresh, delicate mozzarella pearls from the specialty section. If you’re like me on a Tuesday in October, just grab whatever’s cheapest and close enough to eyeball-sized. No one at your Halloween party is going to measure the diameter of your fake eyeballs.
Pepperoni Commitment Issues

Thick-cut pepperoni sticks look dramatic, but the thin-sliced deli kind wraps beautifully and sticks without a fight. If you’re feeling extra lazy, pre-sliced pepperoni will save you from washing a cutting board. It’s Halloween—we have better things to do, like perfecting fake cobweb placement.
Olive Swaps for the “Pupils”
Kalamata olives give you that sinister, deep stare, but green olives with pimentos look creepier in a campy, cartoon-villain way. Don’t have olives? Tiny capers or even sliced jalapeños work in a pinch. The goal is unsettling, not Michelangelo-level precision.
Pepper Flair for Drama
Red bell peppers add that bloody pop of color, but if you’re the spicy type, swap in thin slices of fresh chili. Just make sure your spice tolerance is higher than your guests’—nothing kills party fun like everyone chugging milk while you laugh.
Make-Ahead Magic
These eyeballs can hang out in the fridge for a few hours, but any longer and the olives start giving the mozzarella that “I’ve seen things” look. Wrap them tightly and keep them chilled until showtime. Serve them straight from the fridge for maximum creepy, cold-eyed effect.
Plate Like You Mean It
Throw them on a Halloween food platter with some fake spiders, a dramatic black serving tray, or a backdrop of dry ice smoke. Even the laziest appetizer feels like a production when you commit to the staging.
